Secretary of State for International Development, Rt Hon Hilary Benn,

Left to Right: David Rainford, Secretary of State for International Development Rt Hon Hilary Benn MP, Martyn Rainford, David Iball, Stephen Iball.
As MPs were returning to their constituencies up and down the land cabinet minister Hilary Benn MP found time to fulfil the promise to open Diverse Culture's offices in his own constituency Leeds Central in front of a select group of Leeds business and public sector figures who had gathered to show their support. Including representatives from Touchstone, YABA, West Yorkshire Business Ventures, Global PR & Marketing, Leeds College of Art & Design, Leeds City Council, Bartfields, ACAS, UDL, HSBC, Leeds Chamber of Commerce and the TUC as well as the MP for Selby John Grogan.
Mr Benn said that Diverse Culture really gets people to think and challenge their own attitudes. He added that "Leeds is an ever changing City always that has welcomed successive waves of migrants."
He then mentioned that, while campaigning, he often tells voters of his own immigrant heritage; his mother came from America. This comes as a surprise to them. It is too easy to stereotype people and make assumptions about them. Stereotyping is a lazy way of thinking and means you miss out on the rich variety of people and life.
He then declared the offices well and truly open. |
